NEW DELHI, JUNE 20
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday met Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee in New Delhi and asked the Centre to bail out the state from its fiscal morass.
Stopping short of quoting any figure, she demanded an audit of the Left Front’s rule, blaming it for the collapse of the state’s finances. Stating that the 34-year Left rule had left the state financially paralysed, Banerjee said it needed full fiscal assistance from the Centre.
“Today, the financial situation of Bengal is a disaster, with an accumulated debt of Rs 2,00,300 crore. We explained to the Union Finance Minister the horrible and terrible condition of the state,” she said after the meeting that stretched for over two hours.
“The Left Front government took Rs 17,000 crore last year and spent Rs 8,000 crore in two months. There is no accountability,” she said. She was accompanied by West Bengal Finance Minister Amit Mitra, who also held discussions with Expenditure Secretary Sumit Bose.
